At first glance, the works of Francisco Montoya Cazarez may appear “childlike,” with a sense of liberation, sensitivity, and humor of an imagination untouched by the conventions of adult life. However, upon closer examination, we notice how delicate and intricate they are. Executed in a painterly manner, with the confident touch of a creatively aware artist, their visual resonance is perfectly intentional. Achieving such a sense of ease without departing from the realm of the exquisite requires an exceptionally mature understanding of contemporary imagery. It is a sensibility that manages to create without fear of childlike joy yet without attempting to circumvent purely artistic challenges of the day.

Francisco Montoya Cázarez (1985, Cuernavaca, Mexico) is a Mexican artist based in Berlin since 2010. He studied at La Esmeralda (National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving) in Mexico City and at the HBK (Hochschule fuer Bildender Kunst) in Braunschweig, Germany. In 2011 he received the Masterschuler award from Professor Candice Breitz. While his artistic practice is characterized by the use of everyday objects and found materials in which he investigates the different localities in which his works are produced, his paintings and drawings contain a playful touch that oscillates between reality and the imaginary.
