In the exhibition “GESTURE” Nora Ampova presents a new series of paintings. In them, she turns to the landscape to find herself. Not her orderly and balanced self, but that nature of hers hidden in the storm of emotions of the gesture. “After several years of living outside Bulgaria, surrounded by the pastoral nature of France, I am coming back home for a new life in Bulgaria. Through the gesture of the brush I’m telling new stories. Sometimes sharp and cut like with a sword, other times smooth or golden like dust from a children’s tale.”, says the artist.
In her new exhibition, Nora Ampova has abandoned the familiar carefully arranged compositions. She rejects the cut horizontals and verticals, she has gotten rid of the bright chemical colours to make room for lush vegetation in warm earth tones. Everything in these paintings is created in one breath, with a stroke of the brush, and possesses an inimitable finish.

Nora Ampova (b.1989) is an artist based in Sofia, Bulgaria. The frequent travels and life changes that the author has been going through in the recent years has set the direction of the themes in her artworks. Nora shares her personal and often surreal world, in which the viewers have the opportunity to find and recognize themselves.
Nora Ampova has a bachelor’s degree (2012) and master’s degree (2014) in painting from the National Academy of Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria. She specialized in fine arts at the University of Hertfordshire, Great Britain, as part of the Erasmus program (2011). Over the years, Nora has held more than ten solo exhibitions, among which: “Tachyon” 2022 – Arosita Gallery, Sofia ; “Total Internal Reflection” 2021 – Little Bird Place Gallery, Sofia; “Stories from the Cloud” 2021 – Nuance Gallery, Sofia; “One Billion Seconds” 2020 – Doza Gallery, Sofia; “Cosmos” 2018 – Unicredit Studio, Sofia; “Hide and Seek” 2016 – City Gallery on the island of Lesvos, Greece, etc.
Besides, Nora has taken part in a number of joint projects in the country and abroad, such as: “Space and Presence” 2022 – Permanent Mission of Bulgaria in Geneva; “Thresholds and Marks” – National autumn exhibitions, Plovdiv 2021; “The Next Step Generation” 2015 – the building of the European Commission in Brussels; “Image and Likeness” 2015 – National Gallery, Sofia; “Attention: Fresh Paint” 2015 – Sofia City Gallery, Sofia, etc. Her works are part of the collection of the Hugo Voeten Art Center (Herentals, Belgium), as well as from other private collections in Bulgaria and abroad.
Nora Ampova is the winner of the 2016 Unicredit Bulbank and Stoyan Kambarev Foundation Young Artist Award.
